Short Readings and Prayers for Lent

(Sometimes we can read short passages over and over for weeks or months, allowing the words to slowly settle deeply into ourselves — with them often coming back up to our minds and hearts later in surprising ways!  Please feel free to pick just a few of these to read each morning and evening during Lent.  No need for fancy analysis or mediation. Simply allow them to “take root” and become part of your daily thoughts as you go about normal life!)

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.    I John 1:8, 9

Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”    Luke 15:18, 19

To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, because we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by following his laws which he set before us.    Daniel 9:9, 10

Jesus said, “If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”    Mark 8:34

 Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

 +   +   +

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made.  We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.  And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

+   +   +

Almighty God, my heavenly Father: I have sinned against you, through my own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what I have left undone.  For the sake of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive me all my offenses;  and grant that I may serve you in newness of life, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Psalm 31  In te, Domine, speravi

1    In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame: *
deliver me in your righteousness.

2    Incline your ear to me; *
make haste to deliver me.

3    Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,
for you are my crag and my stronghold; *
for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.

4    Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me, *
for you are my tower of strength.

5    Into your hands I commend my spirit, *
for you have redeemed me,
O LORD, O God of truth.

+   +   +

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.  Matthew 11:28-30

 +   +   +

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

+   +   +

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit;
For you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth.
Keep me, O Lord, as the apple of your eye;
Hide me under the shadow of your wings.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.
