The town derives its name from the prominent 12.5-acre mound located in the southern portion of the town. The most widely accepted explanation for the city’s name stems from the Wichita Indians’ sacred ceremonial ground. Although surrounded by commercial and residential development, Flower Mound possesses a strong governing body to protect it from unnecessary development.
Flower Mound has easy access to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. It refuses the designation of a “city” despite its recent growth. It bills itself as the “Town of Flower Mound” with a “Town Hall” and a “Town Council.”
